Hey, all! My theater/performance ensemble, Empire of Teeth, is offering 2 for 1 tickets for Tribe members this opening weekend of our world premiere production of "The Crook: A Revival," Friday-Saturday, April 21-22, 8:30pm at Track 16 in Santa Monica. It's a wild, darkly absurd and subversive theatrical experience combining deconstructed elements of the first Broadway musical and the dark side of postmodern culture, where everyone is a "crook." Take a bumpy ride with us through the dark underbelly of American spectacle! You can check us out at www.empireofteeth.org or www.track16.com. The show runs through May 6.

To get the 2 for 1 deal, you must reserve by email or telephone with the code REDGLARE. Phone is 310-392-9396. Email is empire@empireofteeth.org. You can also reply to my Tribe address.

Hope all your productions and adventures are going well too!

Take care,

Dolphin Protection Poster

I am asking if anyone in this tribe would like to make a dolphin protection poster that can be used in a campaign about to start.

PM Me if you are willing and able.

Background INfo:

I am passing this along from Penelope Smith, one of my original animal communication teachers. She had a workshop in Chicago this weekend, and highlighted the significance of,and the need to spread awarenss of, the event on October 8th that is mentioned below. It will not only impact our dolphin friends, but the step is expected to be a leap forward in raising consciousness overall regarding our depth of connection with the animals. Certainly a real eye opener.

If you live in the Chicago area and are interested in participating here in the protest of the dolphin massacre, I am expecting that there will be a network of folks going, so I can put you in contact with others. Just let me know, and I'll pass along more information when it is available.

Blessings to all (and thank you for the patience with this posting). Thanks to those who will pass this along to others :-)))
Subject: A Way to Help our Dolphin Friends

Dear Animal Loving Friend,

I'd like to share with you this information from Richard O'Barry, world famous as the former trainer of the movie dolphin, Flipper, and for years as a steadfast activist on behalf of the dolphins and whales.

From my connection and communication with the dolphins and whales, I know that they are our evolutionary leaders and deeply care for us and about our enlightenment. We owe them a great deal of respect and care for them and their (our) oceanic environment as elders and fellow beings. In caring for them, we care for ourselves and all life on Earth.

Here is one important focused way we can assist our cetacean friends. I urge you to read and act to help the dolphins in Taiji, Japan.

The last paragraphs are about a dolphin/ocean/environmental activist, Ben White, who recently passed on, and what a difference one person can make by showing up.

Thank you for listening. Please pass the word on about this way to help our dolphin friends.

With respect and love,

Penelope Smith
_______________________________________________________________________________________

Dear Penelope,

Yes please do network this information in your newsletter. We need everyone to show up.

We both know a great many people who say that they love dolphins. Now's the time to stand up and be counted. If everyone who said that they love dolphins would show up on October 8th at noon in front of the Japanese embassy, the annual dolphin slaughter would end.

Love and Light, Ric
www.savetaijidolphins.org

International Day of Protest Against the Japanese Dolphin Slaughter

As most of you know, the largest slaughter of dolphins and other small whales takes place in Japan every single year. Why don't we get ourselves organized and protest the massacres every year before the killing season starts?

The so-called drive fishery in Japan will kill about 20,000 dolphins and other whales from September through April in the most brutal way imaginable. We can actually do something about this. We can let the Japanese government know that these crimes against nature are unacceptable to the rest of the world. We can speak out against this atrocity loudly and clearly.

Our plan is to organize an international day of protest in several cities around the world before the dolphin massacres begin. If we show up in huge numbers, we will be heard in Tokyo. The goal is to make this the biggest global protest against the drive fishery in history.

We are hoping that everyone who is opposed to the annual dolphin slaughter is willing to show up and demonstrate. We need your help in making the international day of protest successful.

Please note that this will be an all-inclusive event. In other words, the protest will not take place under the umbrella of any one group. The event will be carried out by all of us, on a equal basis. Each group represents itself and will contact the media in their city with their own press release. All participating groups can be listed in the press release in alphabetical order.

Our Japanese colleagues tell us that outside pressure can stop the annual dolphin slaughter. So why not give the Japanese decision-makers some serious, outside international media pressure?

The date of the protest will probably be in late September, just before the slaughter starts in Taiji. (Exact date later announced as October 8.)

We have to get organized early, so here is what we need to know: How many groups are willing to participate in organizing this event? We need as many organizations and individuals as possible to show up in front of the Japanese Embassies in Paris, London, Brussels, New York, San Francisco, Washington DC and other locations. (The more, the better.)

As a first step, we are trying to identify what kind of cooperation we can get from the international animal welfare community. If you and/or your organization is willing to participate in this important global event, please contact me. I'm willing to help coordinate things.

We have some specific ideas as to how to make this a success. We will share these ideas later. And please remember: The goal is to make this event huge, effective and memorable.

Thanks,

Here's a list of cities that will participate in the International Day of Protest Against the Japanese Dolphin Slaughter. This is only a partial list, as others are expected to sign on later.

We don't want to look weak and disorganized, so we need many more participants. If we don't have a strong presence in a particular city, that city will have to be eliminated. Those demonstrators will hopefully attend the protest in another well-attended location. The Japanese government must not get the impression that we are just a handful of the usual protesters. We are going to get one chance (this year) to do this, so we need to do it right or not at all.

Remember, the problem is in Taiji, but the solution is in Tokyo. We want to send the message to the decision makers in Tokyo that the brutal dolphin slaughter is not acceptable to the rest of the world and that the dolphin slaughter (and related captures) must be abolished immediately. In other words, we need to stop the permitting process. The dolphin hunters already told us that if they didn't get a permit from Tokyo, they would stop the killing immediately.

To pull this off, we need TENS OF THOUSANDS of non- violent, peaceful protesters in front of Japanese embassies around the world. We need the MEMBERSHIP of all our various groups to show up, not just a few token staff members and volunteers. We have until September to educate our members as to why it's so important for them to show up and protest the largest slaughter of dolphins in the world.

WE CAN DO THIS.
We have received a great deal of international correspondence lately suggesting that we "Boycott Japan" as a strategy to solve the drive fisheries problem. Although we are not telling other NGOs what their strategy should be, I wanted to clarify that we think a boycott of Japan is a big mistake. Having been to Japan and witnessed the dolphin slaughter up-close and personal, we can report with absolute certainty that the Japanese people are not guilty of these crimes against nature. From what we saw, 26 whalers in 13 boats drive the dolphins into a cove and slaughter them. The vast majority of the people in Taiji and surrounding villages are exceptionally friendly, and they should not be targeted and punished for something they are not guilty of.

I spent most of 1975-76 traveling from Coconut Grove, Florida, to several cities in the United States and eventually Japan with scores of Japanese and American musicians/environmentalists such as Fred Neil, Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, Shigado Izumia, Warren Zevon, Harry Hossano, John Sebastian, Governor Jerry Brown, Paul Winter Consort and a great many other concerned artists. We were known as "The Rolling Coconut Review," and we were trying to put a stop to the BOYCOTT JAPAN, SAVE THE WHALES campaign. Eventually we succeeded. The boycott was the chosen strategy of most of the well-funded US animal welfare/environmental groups who pooled their money and took out full page advertisements in the New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, etc. to get their boycott message out to the American public. This misguided campaign did not save any whales. However, as a direct result of the BOYCOTT JAPAN campaign, Japanese/American children were beaten up on the playgrounds of the USA and called "Jap whale killers." (Jap is a derogatory term) Surely, this is not a situation that we would want to create once again.

The Japanese people don't need a boycott. They need access to the information that we take for granted. If they knew the truth about the dolphin slaughter, they would help us stop it. The fishermen who hunt and kill dolphins in Taiji agree with us. They revealed this during a meeting we had with them at Taiji City Hall. When they asked us why we had come to Taiji, we told them we wanted to document the methods used to conduct the dolphin massacres and let the Japanese people know the truth about this hunt. The fishermen's reply was: "The Japanese people have no right to know about the dolphin slaughter. It is none of their business."

But the Japanese people have every right to know about the dolphin massacres that are carried out in their own country, and we will continue to travel to these remote fishing villages to document what is going on. The fishermen in Taiji spend most of their time hiding their activities. They have erected a roof of blue tarp over the lagoon in which the dolphins are killed, to prevent us from documenting the massacres. They cover up the dead bodied with plastic and butcher the dolphins in a slaughterhouse that is completely covered up. They are paranoid about being photographed while killing dolphins. They know that if the images reach the Japanese public, their days as dolphin hunters are numbered. They will not be able to find public support to continue the practice.

I hereby urge you to approach the Japanese people in a respectful and peaceful manner. It is the Japanese people who hold the key to stopping the dolphin massacres. In order to make this happen, we need to build bridges between us, not burn them.

We need to work with the Japanese people, not against them.

Condemning a whole nation for the actions of a few people is simply unfair. A better strategy would be to isolate the few people who are guilty of killing the dolphins from the rest of the Japanese population who are totally unaware of the problem.

Our chance to expose these crimes against nature and to isolate the guilty from the innocent will come on October 8th. If everyone who attends the demo will bring a friend, our numbers would double. How's that for a concept?

As you can see, the list grows stronger with every passing day. This is very encouraging.

(Penelope) Here's how one person made such a big difference:

From Gar Smith,
Editor Emeritus, Earth Island Journal

I'd like to honor the passing of the incomparable Ben White - a friend, colleague, and Earth Island Journal contributor - with a couple of EcoMole items that capture both Ben's impish spirit and his colossal daring.
And I can't help thinking that Ben, like investigative journalist Paul Jacobs, might have contracted cancer because he was willing to put himself on the front-lines of the environmental danger-zones.

Vaya con Gaia, Ben, you are missed.

Marine World-Bound Dolphins Freed: During a trip to Japan to film the capture of wild dolphins near Iki Island, former Greenpeace and Sea Shepherd activist, Ben White, quietly slipped into a holding tank containing 40 captured dolphins, cut the restraining net and freed the animals to return to the sea. Back in the US, White revealed that four of the dolphins were being held for sale to Marine World Africa USA. White called the marine park "hypocritical" for claiming that it was working to save marine mammals at the same time it was abducting wild dolphins from the ocean. Marine World called White's accusation "ridiculous, vulgar and personal attack" and countered that the park merely attempted to save the dolphins from certain death by negotiating to buy the animals for "a minimal price."
(EIJ, Summer 1993)

Mole Nip: To Earthwatch, a Massachusetts-based research/ecotourism operation, for subsidizing the man-handling of dolphins in Sarasota Bay, Florida. Researcher Randy Wells pursues and restrains dolphins to extract teeth and blood samples. Ben White of Friends of Animals [1234 Garfield Street, Port Townsend, WA 98368; (360) 379-5168] has proposed tracking down and capturing Mr. Wells in order to obtain teeth and blood samples. Humanely, of course. (EIJ, Winter 1995-6)
______________________________________________________________

(Penelope) I found this tribute to Ben White from Ric O'Barry both touching and inspiring:

The Promise

I first met Ben White near Pine Island, Florida. It is so many years ago, I can't remember the date. We called ourselves "The Dolphin Rescue Brigade," and we were there to disrupt the dolphin capture that was about to take place for the National Aquarium. In those early days, almost all of the dolphins captured for amusement parks in the United States and Europe were taken from Pine Island or Mississippi Sound.

Since that time, Ben and I shared many excellent adventures, and a few jail cells, too.

Today, no more dolphin captures take place in US waters, thanks to Ben and this small band of environmentalist activists.

Think about that for a minute. NO MORE DOLPHIN CAPTURES IN THE UNITES STATES. I think that's a really big deal. All because Ben and his friends showed up to do something. It was not the US Fish and Wildlife Service, the National Marine Fisheries Service, the Marine Mammal Commission, the marine mammal scientific community, not even the animal welfare industry that stopped these violent dolphin captures. It was done by the direct action of Ben and a small band of activists. They showed up and disrupted the capture process, got arrested, went to jail and went on a hunger strike; all of which caught the attention of CNN and other international media. The international media exposure caused the captivity industry to back off. They didn't want the public to see the captures on TV. They wanted the uneducated public to think that the captive dolphins came from the sky or that God put them there. Ben was determined to show the world the truth. Disrupting the dolphin captures exposed the violent capture process for the first time since they began in the United States in 1938.

Ben stands out as one of the most altruistic, honest and brave persons I have ever met. He came to our home in Miami November 16, 2003. We asked him to sign our guest book. Here is what he said: "Ric and Helene -- Here is for the big march opposing FTAA, yet another anti-Earth trade pact. On Thursday, 200 of us will march as dolphins. Thanks for the warm welcome to your warm home -- the perfect sanctuary from your travels saving the world. Keep on, stay healthy, keep the faith. I love you guys. Ben White."

I talked to Ben just a few days before he passed away, and assured him that the kind of direct action he stands for will continue on after he is gone. We will continue to show up and do what needs to be done to keep dolphins free and safe from harm. That was the promise I made to Ben before we said I love you and goodbye to one another for the last time.

i'm getting good on Microsoft Front Page and will purchase a url as soon as i get some kind of response from this crew.

at this point, i feel that i'm speaking or typing into the abyss of nothingness....if anyone's paying attention, please let me know.

this website that i will create will be on the main hub that Touch the Sun Network is getting together.

i'm willing to do the work if someone gets behind me........now with over 30 members, someone must be excited about this venture......

~this written in a blog by a friend, i feel it should be posted everywhere....

"Oraibi, Arizona, situated on 3rd Mesa, is the oldest continually occupied settlement in America. The Hopi Nation never went to war with the U.S. They simply plan to outlast us. Their legends include brown, yellow and white men, long before they ever saw any. The word Hopi means Peace. What follows is their latest communication to the rest of us-- "

You have been telling the people that this is the Eleventh Hour.
Now you must go back and tell the people that this is the Hour.
And there are things to be considered:
Where are you living?
What are you doing?
What are your relationships?
Are you in right relation?
Where is your water?
Know your garden.
It is time to speak your Truth.
Create your community.
Be good to each other.
And do not look outside yourself for the leader.
This could be a good time!
There is a river flowing now very fast.
It is so great and swift that there are those who will be afraid.
They will try to hold on to the shore.
They will feel they are being torn apart, and they will suffer greatly.
Know the river has its destination.
The elders say we must let go of the shore, push off into the middle of
the river, keep our eyes open, and our heads above the water.
See who is in there with you and celebrate.
At this time in history, we are to take nothing personally.
Least of all, ourselves.
For the moment that we do, our spiritual growth and journey comes to a halt. The time of the lone wolf is over. Gather yourselves!
Banish the word struggle from your attitude and your vocabulary.
All that we do now must be done in a sacred manner and in celebration.
We are the ones we've been waiting for.

What is a Curiosity Cabinet?

Curiosity Cabinets came into vogue in the 15th Century. They were wooden cabinets with many drawersthat were used to display a collection of artifacts, usually connected with a theme. The original cabinets were considered the pre-cursor to the museum. Many times curiosity cabinets were the only place for commoners to glimpse exotic pieces like the horn of a rhino or chinaware from the Orient. These miniature museums were an attempt to classify science and civilization while the world was still amorphous. Many of these classifications were a strange hybrid of religion, science and superstition that are now considered obsolete.

Our Curiosity Cabinet is very much in the tradition of the original cabinets. We are collectors and our display is a miniature museum of the mind. Our cabinet explores the unconscious and the artifacts that surface in our own psyches that are themselves difficult to define or explain. They are as exotic, strange and intriguing to us as the horn of a rhino was to a peasant living in 15th century England. In an attempt to display the unconscious and put the bits and pieces of our psyche in the confines of tiny drawers, the glimpses and suggestions will mean something different to every person that will explore the cabinet.

The Curiosity Cabinet of the Collective Unconscious will be on display in the Funhouse constructed underneath The Burning Man, September 2005. But, before it gets there check it out at The Hive.
Touch the Sun Productions is also forming a closed web-casting network, that will serve as a membership directory and that will serve as another means of presenting our work via radio broadcasts for d.js and musicians, film and video screenings, an on-line gallery for visual artists, and, a means of sharing information with eachother.

Touch the Sun Productions has a sister collective forming in Belfast, Ireland, and is currently forming links with already established production collectives, intentional communities, ashrams or healing centres, or eco-villages across the globe, with individuals interested in forming a touch the sun collective in their area, and with Nomadic poets.

Collectives and individuals who are interested in linking with touch the sun productions will also join our web-casting network. As more collectives and individuals join, the global directory of artists grows, thereby fostering more opportunities to produce work by drawing from an extrordinarily large group of people. The web-casting network will also link each collective together in Real Time, making it possible for LIVE collaboration between artisans in different locations.

If the idea of a global production collective resonates with you, we invite you to the touch the sun productions tribe. "<<<this written by the tribe's moderator michael aka the maker of happy trees.

I think that our country and our world is flat like the new book by Friedman said however so what is the point? Can we keep it a positive powerful connection from California to NYC to Minnesota to Tokyo to Russia. How can we do it? Dont we have the best possibilites to make it work with open forums such as this? Is creativity in the atmosphere like Jung said or online? How can we all get along?
